An exciting new 860-mile train journey will be available to tourists in April 2026, connecting four beautiful European countries that are loved by visitors. Rail travel across Europe remains a popular mode of transport for tourists. Interrailing trips still prove to be popular, giving people the chance to visit multiple cities easily, bouncing from tourist hotspots and underrated gems across the continent.
For those who wish to explore more of Europe by train, there is exciting news for them. A brand new train journey that spans an impressive 860 miles (around 1,400 kilometres) is launching in April of next year. A new 16-hour sleeper train will take tourists from Basel in Switzerland all the way to Malmö in Sweden, crossing through Germany and Denmark on the way. Highlights along the way include German cities like Frankfurt and Hamburg, as well as the Danish capital of Copenhagen.
Trains will leave Basel SBB at 5.35pm on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, arriving in Malmö at 9.35am. Meanwhile, trains from Malmö will leave at 6.57pm on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Mondays, arriving back in Basel SBB at 11.30am.
These trains will have the capacity to carry around 350 passengers, who can decide to book single, double or triple compartments for their journeys. Breakfast is included in tickets, while passengers will also get fresh sheets and a personal wash basin.
Additionally, there are more expensive compartments where passengers get their own toilet and shower, towels and toiletries. Passengers can also just book seated compartments if they don't want to book a bed.
Tickets for journeys on this train went on sale in early November. Prices change depending on when you book. Although its final stop when travelling from Basel is Malmö, other trains connect you to Scandinavian cities like Stockholm.
However, SBB, the company operating the train, has warned that the service will only be profitable if it receives parliamentary help due to high costs for rolling stock, track access and staff. Under its Climate Change Act, the Swiss government has earmarked around £44 million for the project.
The budget is still awaiting parliamentary approval.
There have been a slew of exciting developments for those wanting to travel by train when on holiday in the coming years. A new 900km rail line will connect cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi within the next few years.
