New Delhi: Skoda have made some great progress in their life under Volkswagen and is now the third-best-selling carmaker in Europe with a 6.3 per cent share through October. In the 100 years that it has existed, this is perhaps their best era they are in, considering the previous Laurin & Klement years. However, Skoda still isn’t neglecting the era before VW took control in the early 1990s. It was the era of being a brand from Czechoslovakia.
Through their ‘Icons get a Makeover series’, Skoda are reimagining their previous years with the futuristic EVs. The newest episode focuses on the brand’s first vehicle to reach one million sales. The rear-wheel-drive, rear-engined 100/110 returns as an imaginary successor to the sedan sold between 1969-77.
How Skoda 100 design language looks
Skoda gives a futuristic twist to 100
Like the other fictional cars from the series, the electric sedan embraces the brand’s Modern Solid design language. Skoda exterior designer Martin Paclt didn’t go too heavy on nostalgia but chose to bring the futuristic vision more. A classic example of this is that the car, instead of a back window, gets a body-coloured curved panel that incorporates a central fin that doubles down as an air intake and houses the third brake light.
Despite all of this, it still takes cues from the 100 and even without an engine at the back, it gets rear-fender vents. The LED light bars at the back and front have reference to the original engine vent and chrome strip, respectively. There’s a fuel cap on the front fender, but it now conceals a charging port.
It is 4155 mm in length and is much bigger than the original Skoda 100. Its hypothetical successor started life from the present-generation Superb and became the larger car. The design lets a dual trunk layout with the back cargo area mounted above the drivetrain.
Like the previous digital concepts, the reinterpretations are not really meant for any future production models. The 100 won’t be of value with the likes of Octavia and Superb all close to being electrified. In fact, the next-gen Octavia has already been previewed in electric form by the Vision O, which is an EV wagon concept to which Paclt contributed before the production model’s launch in the upcoming years.
