New Delhi: The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today approved the establishment of one more semiconductor unit under the India Semiconductor Mission. Already five semiconductor units are in advanced stages of construction. With this sixth unit, India moves forward in its journey to develop a strategically important semiconductor industry. The unit approved today is a joint venture between HCL and Foxconn. HCL has a long history of developing and manufacturing hardware. Foxconn is a global leader in electronics manufacturing. Together they will set up a plant near Jewar Airport at Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority or YEIDA.

The plant will produce display driver chips for mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, PCs and numerous other devices with displays. This plant is designed for 20,000 wafers per month. The designed output capacity is 36 million units per month. Semiconductor industry is now taking shape across the country. World class design facilities have come up in many states across the country. State governments are vigorously promoting design companies.

Students and entrepreneurs from 270 academic institutions and 70 startups are working on world class latest design technologies to develop new products. 20 products developed by these academic students have been tapped by SCL Mohali. The new semiconductor unit approved today will attract investment worth Rs 3,700 crore.

As the country moves ahead in its semiconductor journey, eco system partners have also set up their facilities in India. Applied Materials and Lame Research are the two largest equipment manufacturers. Both now have presence in India. Merck, Linde, Air Liquide, Inox and many other gas and chemical suppliers are preparing for the growth of our semiconductor industry. With the rapid growth in demand for semiconductors in India for laptops, mobile phones, servers, medical devices, power electronics, defense devices and consumer electronics manufacturing, this new unit will further realize Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of a self-reliant India.
