Kolkata. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday made serious allegations regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. He says that the real intention behind this is to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) through the back door, due to which fear is being spread among the common people. On the occasion of Constitution Day, B. R. Speaking to reporters after garlanding Ambedkar’s statue, Banerjee said that fundamental rights were being threatened.
Holding a copy of the Constitution in her hand, Banerjee said that she was saddened to see that people’s voting rights and religious rights were being violated. He said that various sections are being attacked using dirty language, including Dalits, minorities and common Hindu voters. Banerjee said, “The real intention behind this is to implement NRC. We are not only shocked but also saddened. That is why I am present here today to protect India’s democracy.”
Banerjee stressed that people who have irrigated the country’s soil for years are being asked to prove their citizenship. He expressed concern that an atmosphere of fear is being created in the name of citizenship rights. Earlier, in a post on ‘X’, he said that when democracy is under threat, secularism is facing challenge and federalism is being weakened, people must protect the values given by the Constitution.
Describing the Constitution as the backbone of the country, Banerjee said it unites the diversity of India’s cultures, languages and communities. He paid tribute to the makers of the Constitution, especially Dr. B.R. Paid tribute to Ambedkar and also remembered the members who played a role in the Constituent Assembly. “We reaffirm our commitment to the democratic values enshrined in our Constitution,” he stressed.
Constitution Day is celebrated every year on 26 November to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution. The day commemorates the adoption of the Constitution on November 26, 1949, when certain provisions of the Constitution came into force immediately and the remaining provisions came into force when India became a republic on January 26, 1950.
