Bayer Leverkusen chief Simon Rolfes has revealed that making the fastest sacking in Bundesliga history by parting ways with Erik ten Hag was best for both parties. The club's Managing Director for Sport said it was his job to be decisive when he saw the partnership was not heading in the right direction.

Ten Hag replaced Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen in the summer but was afforded just three games in the dugout. The Dutch coach saw a comfortable win over fourth-tier side SG Sonnenhof Grossaspach in his first match, before giving up leads against Hoffenheim and 10-man Werder Bremen to take a single point in the league.

The German side now sit third in the Bundesliga after 11 matches, and defeated Manchester City in the Champions League last time out, under the tutelage of Kasper Hjulmand. Goals from Alejandro Grimaldo and Patrik Schick put City to the sword as Pep Guardiola was left to consider his mistakes.

Rolfe spoke ahead of that game at the Etihad and was plain in his reasoning over the decision. "At the end of the day it is about the connection with the people," he said.

"And we had the feeling it wasn't working out or heading on a good direction. So that's why it is better to stop, for both sides, and thats why we made the change.

"If you're not convinced, then this is my role as a leader. Then I have to take decisions - I only think about what's best for results."

The dismissal saw Ten hag given the boot for the second time in less than 12 months. The former Ajax boss was sacked by Manchester United last season. The Dutch coach criticised Leverkusen following his exit.

"The decision by Bayer Leverkusen this morning to put me on a leave of absence came as a complete surprise. To part ways with a manager after just two league matches is unprecedented," said Ten Hag.

"This summer, many key players who were part of past successes left the squad. Building a new, cohesive team is a careful process that requires both time and trust.

"A new coach deserves the space to implement his vision, set the standards, shape the squad and leave his mark on the style of play.

"I started this job with full conviction and energy, but unfortunately, the management was not willing to grant me the time and trust I needed, which I deeply regret. I feel this was never a relationship based on mutual trust.

"Throughout my career, every season I have been able to see through to the end as a coach has brought success. Clubs that placed their trust in me have been rewarded with success and silverware."

Ten Hag has already rejected another opportunity after turning down the chance to return for a second spell as Ajax manager. The Dutch giants sacked Johnny Heitinga earlier this season after a disastrous run of just two wins in 11 games.
