The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Projectgiving the green signal to Line 4 (Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla) and Line 4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug). This marks the second major approval under Phase-2, following the earlier sanction of Line 2A (Vanaz–Chandani Chowk) and Line 2B (Ramwadi–Wagholi/Vitthalwadi).

Covering a combined 31.636 km with 28 elevated stationsthe two corridors will link major IT zones, commercial hubs, educational institutions, and residential clusters across East, South, and West Pune. The project will be completed within five years at an estimated cost of Rs 9,857.85 crorejointly funded by the Government of India, Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral/multilateral agencies.

Seamless integration across major corridors

Line 4 and 4A are part of Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan and will integrate with existing and sanctioned routes at Kharadi Bypass and Nal Stop (Line 2)and Swargate (Line 1). They will also provide an interchange at Hadapsar Railway Station and future connectivity to Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Roadimproving multimodal movement across metro, rail, and bus networks.

Stretching from Kharadi IT Park to Khadakwasla’s tourist beltand connecting Hadapsar’s industrial zone with Warje’s residential clustersthe new lines will ease traffic across key routes including Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Roadand the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway.

Strong projected ridership growth

Of this, Line 4 (Kharadi–Khadakwasla) accounts for the bulk of demand, projected to rise from 3.23 lakh in 2028 to 9.33 lakh by 2058. The Line 4A spur is expected to grow from 85,555 passengers to 2.41 lakh over the same period.

Implementation underway

Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Multi-Metro) will execute the project, overseeing civil, electrical, mechanical, and systems works. Pre-construction tasks, including topographical surveys and detailed design consultancy, are already in progress.

With this approval, Pune Metro’s network will surpass the 100 km milestonemarking a significant step toward a modern, integrated, and sustainable mobility system.

As Phase-2 expands the metro footprint across the city, Line 4 and 4A are expected to become key urban lifelines—reducing congestion, saving commute time, and supporting greener transportation for Pune’s rapidly growing population.
