Among Kerala’s many natural attractions, one stands apart for offering something no other destination in the country does. Muzhappilangad Beach , located near Kannur in North Kerala, is India’s only official and fully motorable drive-in beach. This distinction has made it a must-visit for road-trip lovers, families, and travellers who want an experience that goes beyond the ordinary.

Stretching for nearly 4 kilometres, Muzhappilangad’s long, firm stretch of sand allows visitors to safely drive cars and motorbikes right along the shoreline. The combination of scenic beauty and the novelty of driving on the beach has turned this quiet coastal strip into one of the most recognisable destinations in Kerala’s northern region.

But how is this possible?

Here comes nature. The beach’s sand is extraordinarily compact, created by years of tidal action and coastal geography that compress the grains tightly together. This results in a surface firm enough to support vehicles without sinking or causing instability.

Because of these natural conditions, Muzhappilangad is the only beach in India where driving is officially allowed and legally recognised. Other beaches may occasionally see vehicles, but they operate under strict prohibitions or limited permissions meant only for local authorities. Muzhappilangad, however, genuinely welcomes travellers to enjoy a drive along its shoreline, as long as they follow the rules.

For those experiencing this for the first time, the drive is unforgettable. With the Arabian Sea stretching wide to one side and coconut groves lining the other, the open sandy stretch offers a sense of space rarely found elsewhere. The absence of traffic, noise, and obstacles makes it feel like a coastal highway created by nature itself.

So where is Muzhappilangad and how to reach it?

The beach is located about 15 kilometres from Kannur city and 8 kilometres from Thalassery, both accessible towns in North Kerala. The drive to the beach itself is scenic. A narrow road branches off from National Highway 66 and winds through a shaded lane of coconut palms before opening suddenly to the wide sandy expanse.

Nearest airport is Kannur International Airport, located about 25–30 km away, nearest railway station is Kannur Railway Station, located around 16 km away, and also the Thalassery Railway Station, around 8 km away.

Among travellers who love long drives or scenic motorbike trips, Muzhappilangad is widely known as a “must-do.” Many drive along the beach multiple times during a single visit, especially during sunrise or sunset when the lighting highlights the coastline beautifully. Incredible photo-ops is all we can think of.

Road trips from Bengaluru, Mysuru, Coimbatore and even Mumbai are common. During certain seasons, the beach hosts events like car rallies, biking activities, and the Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach Festival, which usually takes place in April. The festival includes cultural performances, local food stalls, and sometimes display rides by biking groups.

What else to do hereAlthough driving is the highlight, Muzhappilangad Beach offers several other attractions that make it a wholesome stop for travellers.

Safe swimming conditionsThe waters here are relatively calm compared to some of Kerala’s more turbulent beaches. While caution is always advised, especially during monsoon, the shallow shoreline makes it suitable for swimming and wading.

View of Dharmadam IslandJust off the coast lies Dharmadam Island, a small, lush islet visible from the beach. During low tide, it is sometimes possible to walk part of the way to the island, although visiting is regulated and travellers should follow local guidelines.

Birdwatching opportunitiesThe coastal zone around Muzhappilangad is home to several species of birds, especially during migratory months. Shorebirds, terns, and herons are commonly spotted.

Local food stallsTemporary food shacks appear along the beach, selling fresh seafood, fried snacks, and refreshing drinks. These are especially active during weekends and holiday periods.

Photography and videographyWith its expansive horizon and dramatic light, the beach is a favourite among photographers. Sunrise offers a softer glow, while sunset often bathes the sands in warm, orange tones.

Best time to visitThe ideal season to visit Muzhappilangad is between November and February, when the weather is cooler, the sands remain firm, and the sea is calmer. The period just after the monsoon can also be beautiful, although driving conditions vary depending on sand firmness.

The summer months tend to bring heavier crowds, especially during the beach festival in April.

Important thing to remember: Although driving is permitted, travellers must follow basic rules to ensure safety and protect the beach environment. Maintain moderate speeds at all times; avoid sudden braking or racing. Visitors are advised not to drive during high tide as this is when the sand becomes looser. Always keep a safe distance from people walking or playing on the beach, and avoid littering or spilling any vehicle fluids.
