Out of everything that needs cleaning in the bathroom, the hardest thing to keep on top of is a bath or shower mat. With dozens of suction cups along the bottom of the mat that trap water and moisture, it's a breeding ground for bacteria that can cause mould.
Even if you dry the suction cups it every time you take the mat out the bottom of your bath, spot mould can still appear. Although your first instinct might be to throw the mat away and buy another one, there is a way to save it from the bin and keep it clean.
Many people may head straight for the vinegar spray or bleach to get rid of the spots, but this can often mean lots or time being spent scrubbing. A professional cleaner and housekeeper has shared her fool proof way of getting a suction bath and shower mat sparkling clean every time with minimal effort.
Christie from Hull, who posts on TikTok under the username @christiesvillage, shared a video with the hack, that uses one appliance in the home.
In the video Christie said: "As a housekeeper/cleaner, I'm not going to spend time scrubbing these when you can put it in a quick wash with no detergent and have them all fresh again.
"Hell with your permission, I'll put them on a quick cycle in your machine whilst I'm there - but I'm not cleaning them by hand. If your 20 year bath mat doesn't survive it wasn't meant to be."
The video shows Christie putting a see through mat with bees on it into the washing machine as she sets the appliance on a 20 minute cycle.
People couldn't believe they had never thought about putting a bath mat into the washing machine and thanked Christie for her advice.
One commenter said: "You can put them in the washing machine?!" One person replied: "I usually wash them with a milton sterilising tablet. They come up new."
A second person said: "Well why didn't I think of this? I've been scrubbing and getting a new one every couple of months."
A third said: "I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't think of this."
