Why OpenAI can't use word "Cameo" in its Sora app
25 Nov 2025
A federal judge has ruled that OpenAI can't use the term "cameo" or similar words like "Kameo" and "CameoVideo" in its TikTok-like app, Sora.
The ruling comes after Cameo, a platform for purchasing celebrity videos, sued OpenAI for trademark infringement.
The order is temporary and will remain in effect until December 22. A hearing is scheduled for December 19 to determine if the injunction should be made permanent.
Cameo's CEO expresses satisfaction with court's decision
Reaction
Cameo CEO Steven Galanis said the court's decision "recognizes the need to protect consumers from the confusion that OpenAI has created by using the Cameo trademark."
Galanis also hoped that OpenAI would agree to stop using their mark permanently, to prevent any further harm to the public or Cameo.
Sora's "cameo" feature lets users upload their likeness for use in other people's videos. This has been a major point of contention in the legal battle.
OpenAI disputes Cameo's trademark claims
Disagreement
An OpenAI spokesperson disputed Cameo's trademark claims, saying "We disagree with the complaint's assertion that anyone can claim exclusive ownership over the word 'cameo,' and we look forward to continuing to make our case to the court."
The dispute began when Cameo filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in October, alleging that its use of the term was likely to confuse consumers and dilute its brand.
