Wrexham's Josh Windass has criticised Sheffield United for their celebrations following their Steel City derby victory over his former club, Sheffield Wednesday. United sailed to a 3-0 win at Hillsborough in the Championship on Sunday, thanks to a double from Tyrese Campbell and a late goal from substitute Tom Cannon.

Manager Chris Wilder and his squad celebrated enthusiastically with the away fans at the final whistle, but not everyone was impressed by the display. Windass, who was analysing the game for Sky Sports, had spent five years at Wednesday before moving to newly-promoted Wrexham in the summer.

The 31-year-old forward, son of Hull City legend Dean Windass, suggested that the Blades' celebrations were over the top during his post-match remarks.

He said: "I'm not sure about all these celebrations. Sheffield United were the favourites to go and win today with the squad of players they've got and the situation they're in. But I thought they played really well, I thought they took their chances well. The strikers came on and made an impact, and it was a good performance."

Despite the win, United remain in the Championship relegation zone, but are now just one point from safety. Meanwhile, Wednesday are still stuck at the bottom of the table on -4 points after being deducted 12 points for entering administration last month.

Despite criticising the Blades' celebrations, Windass generally praised their performance. However, his remarks didn't sit well with United fans after a snippet of his comments was shared on X.

One fan said: "So you can't celebrate a win over your nearest rivals anymore? The game has gone." Another supporter posted: "If Windass can't understand why Blades fans would celebrate a derby like that, it probably explains why he wasn't able to win a derby."

A third individual wrote: "The amount of people questioning the celebrations have no idea just how big this rivalry is. Winning this fixture is everything." Meanwhile, another fan added: "Thought he acted like a bitter child in his post-match comments."

On the other hand, United boss Wilder had words of praise for players like Wednesday captain Ba‎rry Bannan, who have remained loyal to the Owls during their current crisis.

Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield, he said: "It's been a tough period for both clubs, for different reasons, and we always knew it was going to be a tough afternoon. We were going to have to overcome an honest group of players, which we eventually did.

"I went up to Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer at the end of the game. I think the way they've handled the situation and conducted themselves is absolute credit to them, not just as professionals but humans really, in terms of what they've had to deal with and galvanise their group."

Windass left Wednesday to sign for Wrexham in July, citing broken promises and delayed wage payments. This allowed him to activate a clause to terminate his contract amidst the club's financial difficulties.

He has already netted five goals and provided three assists for the Red Dragons and was in the starting line-up as Phil Parkinson's team secured a 0-0 draw at Ipswich on Saturday. The result led to Wrexham slipping one spot to 14th in the Championship table ahead of their home game against Bristol City at the Racecourse Ground on Wednesday evening.
