An entrepreneur is stepping up to offer 100 free MRI scans after his dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Prostate cancer, which only affects men, is now the most common cancer in England, according to the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). Around one in eight men in the UK will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime, just last night, former Prime Minister David Cameron revealed his own diagnosis.

Early detection through scans can make all the difference. But for Robin Emerson, 38, his dad wasn’t so lucky and is now battling an advanced stage of the illness. But. Robin is determined to help others catch the disease before it’s too late.

A Belfast native and founder of London and Essex-based Jorja Healthcare, Robin, has teamed up with cancer support community nowwhat.health to offer potentially life-saving MRI scans, usually priced at £350 each, for a total value of £35,000.

Those with high PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test results can apply for one of the tests until all 100 are booked. Additionally, a further 1,000 MRI scans will be made available for just £100 to others.

Robin's father, Alan, was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in May 2016 when he was 64. The disease had already spread to his bones, and the tumours on the outside of Alan's prostate were inoperable and had metastasised.

"It was a huge shock," Robin admitted, "especially as initial tests had suggested Dad was in the low-risk group."

Following an emergency spinal operation that left him wheelchair-bound, Alan was immediately referred to palliative care.

Despite his dad being in immense pain, Robin said: "He continues to battle his condition, and the love of his granddaughters gives him strength. We live one day at a time - grateful that Dad is still with us."

Robin, aware of the hereditary nature of the disease, regularly checks his own PSA levels. He added: "Education of prostate awareness is key. Not many people are aware that an MRI scan can identify various prostate issues, including cancer.

"Family is everything to me and seeing what Dad's been through has driven me to help others."
