New Delhi: A group of young people protested at India Gate in Delhi, raising their voice about the city’s increasing pollution and harmful air quality, on Sunday evening. Around 50-60 protesters gathered at the historic site, shouting slogans against the government and demanding action on air quality.

During the protest, some of them shouted slogans in support of the late Maoist commander Madvi Hidma, which has now sparked controversy. The group entered the C-Hexagon area of India Gate and blocked the main road, even after being warned by DCP New Delhi, Devesh Mahla, that India Gate is not a designated protest site. Officials informed them that protests must follow proper procedures, including applying for permission at Jantar Mantar.

However, the protesters ignored the instructions and broke through barricades. Reports indicate that they used chili powder and tried to attack the police present at the site.

India Gate is not for protest

Police acted quickly to control the situation, arresting more than 15 people on charges of attacking law enforcement during the protest. Protesters had posters of Madvi Hidma in their hands, and when police tried to clear the blocked road, they resisted and attempted to spray chili powder at the officers.

Authorities have confirmed that all arrested protesters will face legal action for attacking police personnel. The Delhi Police are continuing their investigation, including examining the involvement of the group with urban Maoist or “naxal” networks.

The incident highlights growing concerns about public protests in Delhi, as well as the need for protestors to follow legal procedures while raising their concerns. Authorities emphasised that India Gate is not an official site for protests, and anyone willing to protest must seek proper permissions to ensure safety and order.
