Two UK market towns just a stone's throw from London have been named the best places to retire in the whole of England. Chesham and Amersham, set in Buckinghamshire's Chiltern Hills, secured the number one spot, with the towns praised for their access to healthcare and nature.

A new study by Legal and General found Chesham and Amersham were in the top spot, scoring 74 out of 100 overall. Both towns are picturesque with nature trails, historical sites and independent boutiques. However, Legal and General said the area performed "exceptionally well" on its health measure, with many over 65s found to be in good physical and mental health.

Legal and General explained: "It performs exceptionally well on health, with a score of 93, reflecting a strong proportion of over 65s in good physical and mental health, as well as good access to GPs. It also scores highly on financial security (78), and across the other remaining pillars: nature (72), social and community (69), housing (66), and local amenities (64), making it a well-rounded environment for later life."

Chesham is well-known for its Elgiva Theatre, a 300-seat theatre and cinema showing musicals, comedy and many local productions. Meanwhile, those heading to Amersham can enjoy the Old Town, Amersham Museum and even pop into St. Mary's Church.

The villages are also popular among TV and movie fans with both sued for a series of the nation's most loved productions. Midsomer Murders was filmed around the area, with tourists able to enjoy a special guided tour.

Amersham was also used as a filming location for Four Weddings and a Funeral and the Poirot series. Both Chesham and Amersham have direct access to London with two London Underground Metropolitan Line stations nearby.

However, moving to the towns can be expensive, with the proximity to London meaning that house prices can be high. The average house price in Chesham is predicted to be anywhere from £482,000 to £499,500.

While living in Amersham, house prices are likely to be significantly higher, with valuations around the £700,000 mark. Legal and General's survey found Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire was the second best place for retirees, followed by Dorking and Horley in Surrey and Godalming and Ash.
