Indian Railways Rules: A video is going viral on social media, in which a woman is making Maggi by putting an electric kettle in the mobile charging point in the AC coach of the train. This video has raised questions regarding security. Central Railway has said that action will be taken against women passengers, but there are many activities which should not be done while traveling in the train. We are giving you information about 10 such activities.


According to Section 141 of the Railway Act, unnecessary chain pulling is a crime. This affects the safety, timing and operation of the train. This mistake can result in a jail term of up to 1 year or a fine. It may even be both.


Operating appliances like electric kettle, heater, induction, rod etc.


Installing an electric kettle in the mobile charging point of an AC coach, cooking on an induction stove, using a heating rod are considered fire hazards. This is an offense under Section 164 and 165 of the Railway Act. This can result in a jail term of up to 6 months.

People catch moving trains, but this is a rash and negligent act. According to Section 156 of the Railway Act, doing so can result in a jail term of 6 months or a fine of Rs 1000. If an injury occurs or someone else is harmed, the matter becomes more serious.

Smoking is an offense under Section 167 of the Railway Act. Lighting a cigarette in an AC coach can immediately lead to a fine or even arrest. Repeated offenses may result in jail sentence.


Entering tracks, yards or restricted areas


Under Section 147, trespassing is an offense of entering railway property. Going to a place where travelers are not allowed can result in imprisonment of up to 6 months or a fine. Or it could be both. People go to the track to shoot photos/videos, but it is the jail’s fault.

According to Section 145, creating ruckus, quarrelling, harassing passengers after drinking alcohol is a crime. This is one of the most common crimes. In this, Railway Police can make arrest directly. There is a provision of 6 months jail or fine or both.

Traveling with gas cylinder, petrol, kerosene, firecrackers etc. is a serious offense under section 164. This mistake can result in jail and heavy fine. This mistake can put the entire train in danger.


causing damage to a railway station or train


Tearing seat mattress, stealing bedsheet/pillow, breaking wash basin tap, breaking light/fan are considered as theft or damage to railway property. This can result in a jail term of up to 5 years.

Misbehavior with a woman in a train or station is a non-bailable offence. There is a provision for immediate arrest and strict punishment. Railways adopts zero tolerance policy in this matter.


Tampering with emergency gates, signals, tracks


This falls in the most serious category of the Railway Act. According to Section 150 to 152, opening the track, spoiling the signal, creating obstruction on the track is the crime of making the journey dangerous. This can result in a punishment up to life imprisonment. This mistake can put the life of not just one person but the entire train at risk.
