New Delhi, 23 November. Senior batsman KL Rahul was on Sunday appointed captain of the Indian team for the proposed three-match ODI series against South Africa. Rahul was given the command of the team after regular captain Shubman Gill was ruled out of the series due to a neck injury.
It is noteworthy that Gill suffered neck cramps while batting on the second day of the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata, after which he was admitted to the hospital and had to be ruled out of the Test as well as the series.
Wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant, who is captaining Gill in the Test series, will be the vice-captain for this series. The ODI series will start on November 30 in Ranchi and after this the next two matches will be played in Raipur (December 3) and Visakhapatnam (December 6).
Vice captain Shreyas Iyer will also sit out
India’s vice-captain-elect Shreyas Iyer will also not play, having suffered a rib injury while fielding in the Sydney ODI. He was admitted to the ICU after a tear was discovered in his spleen and is out for at least two months. Although he is recovering, doctors have advised him to avoid strenuous work for at least another month. However, while former captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remain intact in the 15-member team, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ravindra Jadeja have also been included.
India’s one-day team: Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Tilak Verma, KL Rahul (captain), Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Rituraj Gaikwad, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh and Dhruv Jurel.
