The India-South Africa Test at the Barsapara Stadium, on the outskirts of Guwahati, which was inaugurated in 2012, marks a historic start for Assam State. This is the first Test venue in the North-East where Tests are being played. After watching IPL and ICC Women’s World Cup matches, now the cricket lovers there will enjoy the real cricket.

A few years ago, who would have thought that someone from Assam would become the BCCI Secretary (Devjit Saikia) and now a city from here, Guwahati, is joining the list of Test hosting venues in India. Cricket matches used to be held in Guwahati earlier also but at that time most of the sports activities of the state took place in Nehru Stadium and this also includes cricket. Now cricket has its own stadium. The Assam government is working on a scheme to convert Nehru Stadium into a FIFA Olympic-standard football stadium.

Some special things about Barsapara Stadium:

* The wicket here is made of red soil and it is expected that it will remain strong for a long time.

* Capacity: 37,000

* Due to the geographical location of the state and the same time zone throughout India, something is happening which has never happened in India before. Normally in Tests the play starts at 9.30 am, in Guwahati Test the play starts at 9.00 am and the toss will take place at 8.30 am. Lunch and tea were interchanged with the first break starting at 11.00 am and lunch at 1.20 pm. Tee before lunch, seen in the initial day-night test in Australia but this is a new beginning in the day test.

* This year, the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 was inaugurated here and was followed by the India-Sri Lanka match which was watched by a record 22843 fans (new record for a group stage match in the Women’s World Cup, previous record: 15935 in the India-Pakistan match in 2024).

* Construction of the stadium started in 2006 (the foundation stone was laid by the then Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in 2004). In 2012, the stadium was inaugurated by the state’s PHE Minister Gautam Roy, who was also the President of the Assam Cricket Association. After this, the first professional match was played – East Zone Senior Women’s Inter-State One-Day Championship match between Assam and Odisha.

* The first international match played here was in 2017 (India-Australia, Men’s T20). This marked the return of international cricket to Guwahati after 7 years.

*In 2019, Women’s T20 International was played here and England was the guest team.

* During this period, a new talent emerged from Assam whose name was Riyan Parag – the first male cricketer from Assam who played for India and his IPL team Rajasthan Royals made Guwahati his second ‘home’.

* The stadium also houses the Assam Cricket Association Academy.

*In 2010, the Assam Cricket Association officially named the stadium as Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Cricket Stadium, in honor of the famous lyricist, musician and filmmaker.

* For the stadium, the state government had given 59 bighas of land to the Cricket Association and after vacating a portion from the encroachers, construction started. In this way, this is the story of a dumping ground which was converted into a test venue.

* Chlorophyll India Sports Turf Technology & Construction Private Limited has built a main ground on approximately 16800 square meters of land like no other in the entire country. It is a 100 percent sand based USGA perched water table profile with a detailed subsoil drainage network laid out on a grid pattern. This area receives very heavy rainfall, hence the subsoil drainage system is such that it can handle the water falling due to cloudburst. It is designed so that play can start within minutes of the rain stopping.

* The main ground has 8 pitches on the wicket square and 10 pitches on a separate practice wicket area spread over an area of more than 2000 square metres.

* Guwahati was a new venue in the IPL in 2020 and Rajasthan Royals were to play two home matches (against Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders) here. For the first time, IPL matches were being held in a North-East city of India. However, during Covid, IPL was taken to Dubai and these matches could not be held. The matches were again scheduled in Guwahati in IPL 2023 and Rajasthan Royals played matches against Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals.
