Trump administration may not challenge state AI regulations
23 Nov 2025
The Trump administration has been vocal against state-level artificial intelligence (AI) regulations.
President Donald Trump himself took to social media this week, advocating for "one Federal Standard instead of a patchwork of 50 State Regulatory Regimes."
This comes after a 10-year ban on such regulations was proposed in Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill," but later struck down by the Senate with an overwhelming 99-1 vote.
Executive order to challenge state AI laws
Legal action
In a new development, the Trump administration is said to be working on an executive order.
The proposed directive would create an AI Litigation Task Force, whose job would be to legally challenge state AI laws.
States that have contested these laws could also face threats of losing federal broadband funding.
However, Reuters reports that this executive order is currently on hold.
Potential backlash against executive order
Opposition anticipated
If the executive order is signed, it could face major backlash.
This includes potential opposition from Republicans who had previously slammed the proposed ban on state regulation.
The move has already created a stir in Silicon Valley, with some industry leaders, particularly those in the Trump administration, criticizing companies like Anthropic for backing AI safety bills such as California's SB 53.
