As soon as the name of Vrindavan is mentioned, a glimpse of the pastimes of Radha-Krishna, the Rasbhoomi on the banks of Yamuna and the temples steeped in devotion emerge before the eyes, but what makes this holy place even more special is the Thakur present here. Those deities who are worshiped not just as idols, but in the form of God himself. In Vrindavan the word Thakur means those forms of Shri Krishna who give darshan and vision to the devotees. These seven Thakurs are called the souls of Vrindavan.

Seven main Thakurs of Vrindavan

Seven prominent Thakurs of Vrindavan have been mentioned in religious texts and traditions. These are the deities which were revealed by the great men themselves and whose devotion gave Vrindavan global recognition. These seven Thakurs are as follows.

1. Shri Madanmohan ji is the oldest Thakur of Vrindavan. These are considered the foundation stones of the path of devotion.
2. Devotees of Shri Govind Dev Ji believe with interest that the idol of Govind Dev Ji was revealed by Roop Goswami himself.
3. Shri Gopinath ji, this Thakur is considered the epitome of rasa and sweetness.
4. Shri Radha Damodar Ji was established by Jeeva Goswami, by seeing it the devotee experiences exclusive devotion to Shri Radha-Krishna.
5. The form of Shri Radha Shyamsundar Ji Shyamsundar Ji is considered very dear to Radharani.
6. Shri Radha Raman ji himself appeared from Shaligram rock. Radha Raman ji, made without any sculptor, is a wonderful miracle.
7. The Leela of Shri Radha Gopnath Ji Gopnath Ji is related to the Rasbhoomi of Vrindavan.

Where is this Thakur now?

During the Mughal period, when Aurangzeb attacked the temples, devotees took these idols to Rajasthan and other places for safekeeping. This is the reason why today Thakur of Vrindavan is worshiped not only in Vrindavan but all over India.

Even today Madan Mohan ji gives darshan to the devotees at his original place in Vrindavan.

Govind Dev Ji was taken to Jaipur and today resides there in a grand temple near the City Palace.

Gopinath ji is also famous in Jaipur.

Radha Damodar ji gives darshan only in Seva Kunj of Vrindavan.

Radha Shyamsundar ji is located in Vrindavan and is considered dear to Radharani.

The temple of Radha Raman ji is in Vrindavan and even today Thakur ji is worshiped in the form of Shaligram Shila.

Radha Gopnath ji was also taken to Jaipur by the devotees and today it is installed there in a grand form.

Why is this Thakur special?

The Bhakti tradition believes that these Thakurs are not mere idols of worship but living forms. Devotees say that one can communicate with these idols, they fulfill wishes and show the path of devotion. For the pilgrims coming to Vrindavan, seeing these seven Thakurs is considered a symbol of complete pilgrimage.
