Father worked till his death
Rehman recently appeared in Nikhil Kamath’s podcast. He was asked how his childhood was in Chennai. Rahman said, ‘I have spent most of my life in Chennai. I was born there, my father worked in a studio. We lived near Kodambakkam, where all the studios used to be.

Then AR Rahman told about his father RK Shekhar and how his father’s hard work spoiled his health and led to his untimely death. He said, ‘My father and mother were thrown out of the house by their own family members. They started living in a rented house and father worked hard day and night and tried to get us our own house. He used to work three jobs simultaneously and due to this his health completely deteriorated. This was the darkest part of my childhood. It took a lot of time to recover from that trauma.


Mother raised me alone
After this he praised his mother, who managed to raise four children single-handedly without a husband. Rahman said, ‘When I was growing up, I saw a lot. My father and grandmother passed away. I was only nine years old when all this happened. Used to see trauma every day. My mother was a single mother, but she was a very confident woman. He himself endured all the troubles. Don’t know what he endured to save us. She was a very strong woman who endured all kinds of insults and raised us alone.


Rahman had a difficult childhood
Rahman revealed that the decision to enter the world of music was also taken by his mother. He also admitted that due to his complete dedication to music, he missed many things of his normal childhood. He said, ‘It was my mother who decided that I should go into music and always encouraged me. Having three sisters, I felt that I should be very clean, because my behavior was visible on the outside also. My entire childhood was spent playing music in studios with 40-50 year old people. I missed the fun with friends in school, the college atmosphere, everything. Missed a lot, but got a chance to spend time with very smart and intelligent people in the studio.
