As soon as the wedding season starts, huge demand for small notes is visible in the market. The situation is such that the bundles of new notes of Rs 10, 20, 50 and 100 have almost disappeared both in banks and markets. Taking advantage of the shortage of small notes, black marketeers have become active and are openly charging more than the face value. The situation has become so serious that a Rs 10 note is being sold for Rs 14, that is, a bundle of Rs 1000 is now being sold for Rs 1400.
In fact, due to traditions like giving money in wedding ceremonies, blowing notes during rituals and garlanding the groom with notes, the demand for small notes increases manifold. This is the reason why people give more preference to 10, 20 and 50 rupee notes instead of big notes. Taking advantage of this demand, some shopkeepers and middlemen are earning immense profits. Bundles of small notes are not available in most of the banks including PNB and SBI for the last several days. According to the information, even bundles of new notes of Rs 100, 200 and 500 are not available in some banks. Due to this, common people and married families are facing huge problems.
Many shopkeepers in the jaggery market area have openly admitted that they are charging Rs 1400 for a pack of Rs 10, Rs 2350 for a pack of Rs 20 and Rs 250 to Rs 300 for a pack of Rs 50. At the same time, the price of the garland of notes prepared for the groom has also increased more than double.
The thing to note is that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has a rule that no amount can be bought or sold more than its printed value. Despite this, the administration and bank officials are turning a blind eye instead of taking action against this illegal business. Neither any kind of strict monitoring is being done, nor are any strict steps being taken against those involved in black marketing.
Local people say that if the administration does not pay attention in time, the situation may become more serious in the coming days. This shortage of small notes has become a big problem for the general public during the wedding season. People are now expressing hope that the district administration and bank officials will immediately intervene and stop black marketing.
