Delhi: Shubman Gill could not play in the second Test match against South Africa due to neck spasm. Rishabh Pant has taken the responsibility of captaincy in his place. Gill may also be out of the ODI series and the names of KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant can be considered for captaincy in ODI. While senior batsman Rohit Sharma is also in the team.

Shubman Gill may get rest from ODI series
According to reliable sources of BCCI, Shubman Gill’s injury is not just a neck spasm. He will need rest and the Indian team management will not rush his return. Gill suffered neck cramps while batting in the first Test in Kolkata. Then he retired hurt and returned back to the pavilion. After this he was admitted to the hospital and did not come to bat in the second innings.

Shubman Gill is currently in Mumbai where his MRI and other tests are being done. The source said tests are being conducted to see whether there is a muscle or tissue injury. As of now, the selectors are hopeful that he will be able to play T20 against South Africa. Rishabh Pant is a strong contender for captaincy who is also captaining in the second test. However, in the last one year he has played only one ODI.

Jaiswal can open with Rohit
According to PTI report, Yashasvi Jaiswal can open the innings with Rohit Sharma in the ODI series. Abhishek Sharma can be the reserve opening batsman. Harshit Rana, Mohammad Siraj and Arshdeep Singh will take care of the fast bowling. Jasprit Bumrah may be rested. Hardik Pandya, who is suffering from injury, will play only T20 till the World Cup next year. Kuldeep Yadav may take a break due to personal reasons. In such a situation, the onus of spin will be on Akshar Patel, Varun Chakraborty and Washington Sundar.

African team has announced its squad
There is a possibility that the Indian team’s squad for the ODI and T20 series may be announced in one to two days. South Africa has announced the squad for both ODI and T20 series, in which the captain of the ODI team is Temba Bavuma. Aiden McCram has got the command of the T20 team.
