Education Debate: Indian tech billionaire and Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamat is embroiled in controversies these days. The reason is his recent statement, in which he said that “If someone is doing MBA at the age of 25, he would probably be some kind of idiot.” His comment quickly went viral and many people called it insensitive.
Meanwhile, 27-year-old Anaheez Patel, studying at New York University (NYU) Stern School of Business, has publicly opposed Kamat’s statement. Posting a video on Instagram, Patel said that a person with such huge reach and influence should not make such a statement.
Patel said in his video that in a country like India, it is wrong to demotivate regarding studies. He said, “The world does not run on the ideas of a few people. In the video, Patel also told that there are many industries where entry is difficult without an MBA degree – like consulting, private equity, venture capital and finance sectors.
He said that these sectors demand specific skills, networking and training, which can only be achieved through MBA. Patel further said, “If you are 25 years old and doing an MBA, you are not stupid at all. People who make fun of it are probably feeling insecure about your talent and hard work.” This video of Anaheez Patel is getting immense support on social media.
After Anaheez Patel’s video went viral, people also criticized Kamat’s statement. Many users wrote that blaming the entire education system because of a few successful individuals is a dangerous thinking.
One user commented, “Higher education is a path to a stable and secure career for many, especially those who do not have networks, money or connections.”
Another user said, “Ironically, these same people later write: ‘MBA required’ in job posts.” This entire controversy has sparked a big debate on social media whether the path to success lies through education or is decided only by relying on exceptions.
