New Delhi: A power-packed century from Travis Head powered Australia to a massive eight-wicket win over England in the first Ashes Test on Saturday. This happened to be the first Ashes match to finish inside two days since 1921, as the hosts took 1-0 lead in the five-match series in Perth.


Chasing 205 runs, Head ran riot on the English bowling attack with a breathtaking 69-ball century. He did the majority of the work and got out when Australia needed just 13 runs ton win. It was Marnus Labuschagne (51 not out) who took the side home in the 29th over with the hosts chasing the target in just a single session.


With this miraculous win, Australia have maintained their 100 per cent record in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. In the current cycle, Australia have secured four wins from as many matches while England remain in the sixth spot with 2 wins and 3 defeats in 6 matches thus far. Their PCT has however dropped from 43.3 to 36.1 after the defeat at the Optus stadium in Perth.

England were in a dominant position in the first four sessions but lost the control after suffering a batting collapse post Lunch on the second day. After winning the toss and opting t bat first on Friday, England were bundled out for 172 runs with pacer Mitchell Starc leading the bowling attack with career-best figures of 7 for 58.


Australia were then bowled out for 132 runs with Ben Stokes claiming a five-wicket hauls to rattle the hosts. In the second innings, England were cruising at 65/1 but after then, suffered a batting to be all out for 164. While the total of 205 looked easy but considering the fate of the batters on both the sides in the earlier innings, nothing could be assured of. It was Head who changed the scenario at Perth completing a brilliant chase.
