Web service provider Cloudflare experienced an outage on Tuesday evening, affecting several sites including X, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Canva and more.

Users who were trying to log on to X, ChatGPT etc were shown the message: “Internal server error on Cloudflare’s network, please try again in a few minutes.”

Why were X, ChatGPT and other sites down?

Cloudflare was scheduled to undergo a maintenance on Tuesday at its data centres in Tahiti, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Santiago in Chile. However, the web service provider did not confirm it the outage was caused by this scheduled maintenance.

Cloudflare has released a statement on Tuesday, saying it is probing the cause of the outage. “Cloudflare is aware of, and investigating an issue which impacts multiple customers: Widespread 500 errors, Cloudflare Dashboard and API also failing. We are working to understand the full impact and mitigate this problem. More updates to follow shortly,” read the statement.

Later, another update from Cloudflare stated, “We are continuing working on restoring service for application services customers.”

This comes a month after Amazon Web Services experienced a similar snag, disrupting several websites including WhatsApp, Reddit, Snapchat, and Fortnite.
