Microsoft just made Windows handheld gaming more Xbox-like
21 Nov 2025
Microsoft has announced that the "full screen experience" (FSE), initially available on Xbox Ally and Ally X, will be available for all Windows 11 handheld devices starting today.
The FSE is a touch and controller-friendly version of the Xbox PC app, designed to be more intuitive than the standard Windows desktop for handheld devices.
It brings together games from different platforms like Steam and Epic Games Store, while also providing easy access to Game Pass for subscribers.
FSE: A streamlined gaming experience on Windows
Enhanced usability
The FSE comes with Microsoft's customizations to make it more efficient and user-friendly.
It consumes fewer resources than the standard Windows desktop, and provides easier methods to switch between apps or set up Windows for the first time.
These changes are aimed at making the use of Windows without a mouse and keyboard more convenient, similar to what one would experience on a console.
Microsoft's future plans for FSE
Expansion strategy
While the initial rollout of FSE will benefit PC handheld owners, Microsoft also has plans to extend this experience "to more Windows 11 PC form factors through the Xbox and Windows Insider programs soon."
This move could support speculation that the tech giant is planning to create its next Xbox as a high-end PC instead of a traditional gaming console.
