Spotify's new tools spotlights creators and stories behind songs
20 Nov 2025

Spotify has announced a range of new features aimed at highlighting the people behind users' favorite music.

The update will include information about producers, engineers, songwriters, and background vocalists.

The streaming giant is also introducing tools to reveal how songs are interconnected and what inspired them in the first place.

SongDNA: A new way to discover music
Feature launch

The second set of tools will be available through an interactive feature called SongDNA.

This innovative tool will let users see which songs are sampled in a particular track, who has covered it, and what other projects the song's collaborators have worked on.

The feature was first reported by TechCrunch in October after reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong found references to it in the app's code.

WhoSampled database powers SongDNA feature
Database integration

The SongDNA feature is powered by the user-generated database WhoSampled, which Spotify recently acquired.

This move will allow users to discover other projects that artists and musicians associated with a particular track have worked on.

Notably, rival streaming service TIDAL already provides interactive credits for users to explore music through song contributors.

'About the song' feature to offer deeper insights
Additional feature

Along with SongDNA, Spotify is also launching a feature called "About the song."

This will let listeners explore swipeable cards in the "Now Playing" view.

The cards will provide information such as what inspired a song, stories behind it, its cultural impact, and more.

These stories will be sourced from third-party resources with links provided in the cards.

Expanded song credits feature to roll out soon
Feature rollout

The expanded Song Credits feature will start rolling out on mobile devices from today, with a desktop version expected in the coming months.

However, both SongDNA and About the song features will be exclusive to Premium subscribers.

The features are set to launch early next year as Spotify for Artists Preview, giving those involved in music a chance to preview them first and ensure accuracy before public release.
