Holy story of Margashirsha Amavasya: Story of 'Sona Dhobin'

The story of 'Sona Washerman' and a Brahmin girl is very popular in the fast story of Margashirsha Amavasya, reciting which brings unbroken good fortune.

In ancient times, a poor Brahmin lived with his wife and daughter. His daughter had all the qualities, but there was no marriage line in her hand. Once Sadhu Maharaj came to their house, who was pleased with the girl's service and blessed her with a long life, but also told that she would soon become a widow after marriage.

The Brahmin couple was very sad to hear this. The sage also told the solution: On the new moon day of Monday, if a faithful woman named Sona Dhobin applies the vermillion of her demand on the demand of this girl, then her widowhood will be averted.

Sona the washerman lived far away. The Brahmin girl went to the gold washerman's house without informing him and started serving him. She would clean his house every morning and return after completing all the household work. After a few days, the gold washerman felt that someone was serving his house, but he did not know.

One day the washerman secretly caught the girl. On asking, the girl told everything the sage had told her. Sona the washerman was devoted to her husband and her brilliance was extraordinary. She agreed to help that girl.

Coincidentally, the next day was Monday's Amavasya. As soon as the gold washerman applied vermilion to the bride's demand, her husband died at that very moment. The washerman did not even drink the water, he immediately took Bhanwari (circumambulation) 108 times under the nearby Peepal tree and drank water remembering “Truth, Contentment and Dharma”. Due to the influence of her virtue and patriotism, her husband came back to life.

Thus, due to the virtue of the gold washer, the marriage of the Brahmin girl was averted and she received unbroken good fortune.
