The parents of Amayra have alleged that their daughter was forced to take her own life after teachers ignored her repeated complaints about being bullied by her classmates.
On November 1, the nine-year-old jumped from the fourth floor of the Neerja Modi School in Jaipur. She was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival. The CCTV footage showed her climbing the railing before jumping.
The recording from inside the classroom, reportedly, showed Amayra walking up to the teacher twice, minutes before she took the extreme step. It is not yet clear what she told her teacher, as there was no audio recording despite CBSE guidelines mandating it.
NDTV quoted said Amayra’s uncle Sahil as saying: “How come there is no audio available in the CCTV that should be there as per CBSE guidelines? In fact, 15 days of CCTV footage should be available. It’s a prestigious school of Jaipur. They charge substantial fees, but where is the accountability?”
He also questioned the absence of a grill or a net for safety in a “six-floor building with over 5,000 children”.
The child’s mother, Shivani Meena, was quoted as saying by NDTV that a year ago, she had forwarded a voice clip by her daughter to her class teacher in which she was crying and refused to go back to her school, but did not get any help. Shivani also said that she talked to the teacher and the class coordinator about the matter, but it fell on deaf ears.
Both Shivani and her husband Vijay alleged that their daughter was subjected to bullying and teasing, involving a boy. Vijay even brought it up during a Parent-Teacher Meeting, but in vain.
Jaipur’s Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajarshi Raj Verma and Ramniwas Sharma, the District Education Officer (Primary), assured all that the matter is being probed.
