New Delhi: Margashirsha month’s Amavasya Tithi is considered extremely auspicious and spiritually powerful in Hinduism. The acts of tarpan, pind daan, charity, mantra chanting, and Vishnu–Lakshmi worship performed on this day are believed to give manifold results. The powerful energy of Amavasya, combined with the sacredness of the Margashirsha month, makes this date even more impactful.
This year, Margashirsha Amavasya will begin on 19 November 2025 at 09:43 AM and will end on 20 November 2025 at 12:16 PM. According to the Udaya-tithi (sunrise-based calculation), the main worship day will be 20 November (Thursday). All rituals such as tarpan, charity, chanting and Vishnu–Lakshmi worship done on this day are believed to bring multiplied blessings.
Certain times during the Amavasya Tithi are considered especially fruitful for performing rituals:
Taking a bath during Brahma Muhurat on Amavasya purifies both body and mind. Wear clean clothes and take a vow in your sacred space, declaring that you will perform pitru rituals, charity, and Vishnu worship with full devotion.
The main purpose of Margashirsha Amavasya is to satisfy and honour the ancestors. Perform tarpan with sesame seeds, akshat (rice grains), water, and flowers. If possible, perform pind daan at a sacred place; otherwise, it can be done at home following proper rituals. Lighting a lamp (deep daan) is considered especially beneficial for ancestral peace.
On this day, the combined worship of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi brings prosperity, fortune, and happiness to the family. Offer them water, flowers, incense, a lamp, and naivedya. Chanting “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” or the “Shri Suktam” is considered extremely auspicious.
Donating black sesame seeds, jaggery, food grains, ghee, blankets, warm clothes, or essential items is believed to bring immense merit. Feeding the hungry, cows, dogs, and birds is also spiritually uplifting and highly recommended.
Lighting a lamp in the northern direction of the house during the evening is considered a powerful remedy for ancestral peace and for removing negative energies. Chanting “Om Pitrudevaya Namah” brings mental stability and invokes the blessings of the ancestors.
