IND vs SA 1st Test: The first Test match played at Eden Gardens ended on the third day itself, where South Africa defeated India by 30 runs and took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. India had an easy target of 124 runs, but the process of falling wickets did not seem to stop and the entire team was reduced to 93 runs in 35 overs. Captain Shubhman Gill could not come on the field to bat due to a neck injury, which further weakened the team’s position. Washington Sundar played the highest innings of 31 runs for India, but his efforts could not change the result. For South Africa, spinner Simon Harmer gave a blow to India’s hopes by taking four important wickets.
In the match, South Africa scored 153 runs in its second innings and gave India a lead of 123 runs. Captain Temba Bavuma led the team with his solid play and gave stability to the innings by scoring an unbeaten 55 runs. Among the Indian bowlers, Ravindra Jadeja took four wickets, but could not stop Bavuma’s tough fight. Earlier, South Africa’s first innings was limited to 159 runs, while India scored 189 runs in its first innings and took a lead of 30 runs.
The biggest turning point of the Kolkata Test came when India’s innings was in deep trouble and the score was 77 for seven. At this time Akshar Patel decided to score runs fast. He played some good shots and tried to turn the match towards India. At the other end, the bowlers were at the crease, so the pressure on Akshar to increase the run rate increased.
While scoring runs at a fast pace, Akshar tried to play a big shot on the ball of Keshav Maharaj, but could not cross the boundary and was caught out. He was out after scoring 26 runs and his wicket fell at India’s score of 93. If the letters had lasted a little longer, the picture could have been completely different since the target was smaller.
Interestingly, Keshav Maharaj, who took the wicket of Akshar, is of Indian origin. His family had migrated to South Africa from India generations ago. Maharaj is also considered a religious devotee of Ram ji and Hanuman ji. Although he was born in Durban, his roots are linked to Indian tradition.
