Manchester United wonderkid Chido Obi has been handed a place back in the senior squad following Benjamin Sesko’s injury scare.

The Danish forward was snapped up from Premier League rivals Arsenal last year after stunning goalscoring exploits within the Gunners’ youth ranks. The 17-year-old continued his stunning form after signing for United, having netted 12 goals in 10 outings for the under-18s. He also fired in six goals in 16 appearances for the under-21s.

Obi's form was good enough for the forward to be given first-team recognition, having made eight appearances for the senior side over the past 12 months. Unfortunately for the youngster, those opportunities have been few and far between recently, with his most recent appearance coming on the final day of last season against Fulham.

But with United’s frontline having been hampered by injuries over recent weeks, Benjamin Sesko the latest to have been hit with an issue, Obi has been handed a first-team reprieve.

As per The Sun, the teenager has been offered a place to train alongside the first-team squad. And while that is a normal measure during the international break, Obi was particularly happy to be back in the fold.

The striker could potentially play more of a role for the first-team over the coming weeks given Sesko’s injury. Asked about Ruben Amorim last season, Obi said: "He’s just told me to be humble and keep working hard every day.

“And hopefully, I get more opportunities soon. My Dad and my Mum always told me to be a good person and listen to my coaches because they want me to get better, so it’s good."

He added: "I’ve learnt to be smart and to think quicker by training with the first team because the game is quicker compared to Academy football. It helps me a lot, training with them every day.”

Obi’s first chance to potentially play after the international break could potentially come in United’s next Premier League game against Everton. United currently sit seventh in the table after winning five out of their opening 11 games of the campaign.

In other academy news, teenage defender James Overy has been handed a call-up to the senior Australia squad for upcoming games against Venezuela and Colombia. The youngster has yet to actually make an appearance for the United first team.
