Shubman Gill eyes Ricky Ponting’s world record : India and South Africa A two-match Test series will begin between them. The first match of the series will be played in Kolkata on November 14. During the two-Test series in South Africa, Indian skipper Shubman Gill will have a chance to break Ricky Ponting’s world record as captain. Ponting currently holds the world record for most centuries as a captain in a single year. In 2006, Ponting scored seven Test centuries as captain.



Shubman Gill has already scored five centuries in 2025. If Shubman GillHe managed to break Ponting’s world record by hitting three centuries in four innings in the Test series against South Africa. Moreover, Shubman Gill is only one century away from setting the Indian record for most centuries by a captain in a year.


Virat Kohli holds the record for scoring most centuries as India’s captain in a single year. Virat Kohli has achieved this feat twice in 2017 and 2018. Don Bradman (1948), Allan Border (1985), Brian Lara (2007), Mahela Jayawardene (2007) and Michael Clarke (2012) have also scored five centuries as captain in a single year in Test cricket.



If Shubman Gill hits two centuries, he will become joint second in the list of batsmen with most centuries in a calendar year and if he reaches eight centuries, he will go straight to second. If Shubman Gill scores four centuries in all four innings of the series, he will equal the record for most centuries by a batsman in a calendar year, which is currently held by Mohammad Yusuf (9). Gundappa Vishwanath, Sunil Gavaskar, Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid (twice), Virender Sehwag and Kohli (twice) have achieved the feat of scoring five centuries in a year.
