On Saturday, Haryana's Health Minister, Aarti Singh Rao, announced that a public health warning has been issued following the discovery of excessive levels of diethylene glycol (DEG) in a cough syrup.
This warning was based on an official letter received from the sub-regional office of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) in Guwahati, as reported by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of Haryana.
In an official statement, the minister explained that the cough syrup formulation, Planokuf D, which contains cetirizine hydrochloride, phenylephrine hydrochloride, and dextromethorphan hydrobromide, manufactured by Shreya Lifesciences Private Limited, was found to have DEG impurities exceeding acceptable limits.
DEG is a toxic chemical that can lead to severe health issues, including acute toxicity, kidney failure, neurological disorders, and even fatalities in children. Rao urged the public to remain vigilant and report any availability of this affected batch to the nearest drug control officer.
