British Airways has issued major news for passengers over its Wi-Fi services. The airline has revealed that it will offer complimentary onboard Wi-Fi fast enough for video streaming after its parent firm struck a partnership with Elon Musk's Starlink.

The carrier confirmed it will begin introducing the technology on services from next year, forming part of a '£7 billion transformation'. Its parent company, International Airlines Group, has secured an arrangement with Starlink to deliver internet access across more than 500 aircraft throughout its fleet.

Starlink, which utilises thousands of satellites circling Earth, belongs to Mr Musk's SpaceX aerospace enterprise. British Airways said travellers will soon receive complimentary Wi-Fi access in 'whichever cabin they’re travelling in', and will not need a 'special login' to do so - whereas, currently, the airline offers limited Wi-Fi service across most of its fleet.

This spans text-based messaging, which comes free to loyalty programme members, through to packages allowing travellers to 'stream music, video content and films'. The latter between £4.99 and £21.99 depending on the duration.

Sean Doyle, British Airways’ chief executive, said: "We’re continuing to focus on transforming our customer experience. Launching Starlink on both our long-haul and short-haul aircraft is game-changing for us and our customers, elevating their experience on board our flights by offering them seamless connectivity from gate to gate.

"Especially on short-haul, this will really differentiate us from our competitors. With our new Wi-Fi powered by Starlink, our customers will be able to enjoy lightning-fast, low-lag internet from the moment they board to the moment they land - even over oceans and remote regions. It’s Wi-Fi that feels like home, even at 38,000 feet."

The fresh Starlink partnership also comes shortly after British Airways announced a new transatlantic flight route last month. The new path will connect London Heathrow to St Louis, a major city in Missouri situated at the centre of the Midwest.

Famed for its legendary Gateway Arch and lively neighbourhoods, the UK carrier believes St Louis offers something for every traveller. Its flights to the destination are due to commence on April 19, 2026 and will run four times weekly during the summer months.

Following the announcement, Neil Chernoff, British Airways' Chief Planning and Strategy Officer, said in October: "St. Louis is a fantastic addition to our US network – it’s a destination in itself as a city with a rich history and a vibrant cultural scene, as well as a gateway to exciting destinations beyond this.

"As the only direct route from the UK, this service will open up exciting new opportunities for our customers and further strengthen ties between the UK and the US Midwest."

British Airways claims to serve more American cities than any other UK airline, with St Louis poised to become its 27th. The move will make British Airways the only UK airline operating direct flights to St. Louis.
