During Friday’s second T20I at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia’s all-rounder Tim David and India’s spinner Varun Chakravarthy were involved in a light-hearted on-field moment. The incident happened in the ninth over of Australia’s 126-run chase. David retreated from his position as Chakravarthy prepared to bowl the second delivery of the over. Despite finishing his run-up once more, Chakravarthy returned to his target and did not deliver the ball. India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, couldn’t help but smile after Chakravarthy’s reaction to David’s deed.
A few deliveries later, Chakravarthy struck again, dismissing David with a sharp caught-and-bowled effort. The Indian spinner delivered a length ball on middle and leg stump, which David mistimed straight back to him. Chakravarthy finished with impressive figures of 2 for 23 from his four overs.
In the match summary, Josh Hazlewood shone with the ball, claiming three wickets for just 13 runs to put India under early pressure. Mitchell Marsh then led Australia’s chase with a blazing 46, steering his side to a four-wicket victory.
Hazlewood’s brilliant four-over spell at the start of the innings set up the win, as India were bowled out for 125 in 18.4 overs after Marsh won the toss and opted to field first.
For India, opener Abhishek Sharma was the standout performer, smashing 68 off 37 balls with eight fours and two sixes. He contributed more than half of India’s total before falling for the ninth wicket in the 19th over.
Australia comfortably reached 126 for 6 in 13.2 overs, though Jasprit Bumrah added some late drama by taking two wickets in consecutive deliveries when the hosts needed just two runs to win.
Marsh’s quickfire 46 off 26 balls ensured Australia chased down the target with 40 balls remaining.
After the opening match of the five-game series was washed out in Canberra on Wednesday, the second T20I saw a massive turnout of over 82,400 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The series now heads to Hobart for the third match on Sunday, followed by a double-header in Queensland next week.
