England manager Thomas Tuchel could call-up Carl Rushworth to his next squad after sending scouts to watch the Coventry star. Rushworth joined the Sky Blues on a season-long loan from Brighton in the summer and is enjoying his time with the club.
Coventry sit top of the Championship after a superb start under Frank Lampard. They are unbeaten through 12 games, winning eight and drawing four to make a strong start to their bid for promotion to the Premier League.
It is Coventry’s attack which has most caught the eye, with 34 goals plundered so far – 14 more than any other team in the division. But they also boast the second-best defensive record, with Rushworth keeping six clean sheets in the Championship so far.
Rushworth, 24, has been involved in England youth squads from under-19s up to under-21s and could be close to senior recognition, according to talkSPORT. Tuchel’s scouts have been paying close attention to his development and he is on the radar ahead of games against Serbia and Albania in November which carry little significance after England qualified for the 2026 World Cup.

England’s last squad, for their 3-0 friendly win over Wales and 5-0 World Cup qualifying triumph over Latvia, saw Jordan Pickford supported by Dean Henderson and James Trafford. Pickford has been the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper for years, having kept his status when Tuchel succeeded Gareth Southgate as manager, via an interim spell of Lee Carsley.
Trafford would appear the most threatened goalkeeper of the three, having moved from Burnley to Manchester City in the summer and given up regular first-team football. Trafford re-joined his former club for a £31million transfer fee, only to see Gianluigi Donnarumma arrive from Paris Saint-Germain later in the same window to take the No.1 position under Pep Guardiola.
By contrast, Rushworth is playing every game for Coventry and recently went 613 minutes without conceding, the longest such run in the club’s history. He did, however, blot his copy book by conceding a penalty in their 3-1 win over Watford on Saturday afternoon.
Guardiola certainly doesn't foresee any issues with Trafford at international level. “Only I can say we are delighted he is here,” he said ahead of City’s Carabao Cup match against Swansea on Wednesday night.
“He will have to be ready in case we need him in the Premier League or Champions League. We have an incredible keeper [who will be] England number one sooner or later.”
Despite conceding a penalty, which Watford converted, Rushworth was forced to make several good stops as the Sky Blues raced into a 3-0 lead in the first half on the weekend. “Carl Rushworth made some great saves for us,” Lampard noted. “That is what he is there for and it is great to see a continuation of his form. We did a lot of damage in the first half but they are a counter attacking team.
“We had to be a bit careful in how we played but we had to take the sting out of the game. We want to win games. If you get loose against good opposition they are dangerous.”
