Meta-owned WhatsApp has now decided that it is going to make its platform commercial. According to the company, now advertisements will be shown in Status and Channels tab only. These ads will be tailored to users’ preferences and usage patterns, so that they see content that is most relevant to them.
Meta has clarified with this update that the privacy of users’ personal chats, calls and statuses will remain as safe as before. The company says “End-to-end encryption will still be intact, and your private conversations will not be shared with any third party.” Ads will appear only in the Updates tab, not during chats or calls.
With this new feature, WhatsApp has made changes in its Privacy Policy and Updates Tab Terms. Users will get a pop-up while opening the app in which they will have to accept these new rules by pressing Continue. If a user does not want to agree immediately, he will also have the option of Not now.
Meta aims to develop WhatsApp as a content and business platform, not just a chatting app. The company wants brands, businesses and creators to be able to connect directly with audiences through its channels. However, for some users, this new feature may disrupt the “clutter-free” experience of WhatsApp, as ads will now appear in the Status section as well.
This big step of WhatsApp is not only a means of increasing revenue for the company, but will also introduce a new business model in the world of social media platforms. However, users will now have to accept the changes in their Updates tab.
