Actor-politician Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has now approached the Supreme Court demanding an impartial investigation into the tragic stampede in Tamil Nadu’s Karur. 41 people were killed in this stampede, while more than 60 people were injured.
TVK, in its petition, has requested that the case be investigated by an independent agency and monitored by a retired Supreme Court judge. The party has challenged the order of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Madras High Court and challenged its order in the Supreme Court.
It is noteworthy that Madras High Court had already ordered SIT investigation in this matter. This team is being led by IPS officer Asra Garg, along with whom Namakkal Superintendent of Police Vimala and CSCID Superintendent of Police Shyamala Devi have been included. The court had directed the Karur police to immediately hand over all the documents to the stampede to the investigation team.
In its last hearing, the High Court had strongly reprimanded the organizers of Vijay’s rally and said, “Be it leaders or party workers, even when the President, Prime Minister, Chief Minister and all political parties expressed grief over this incident, the organizers of the event completely backed down.” The court had remarked that the organizers had failed to ensure the safety of the public and children.
Even before this, the family members of a victim had filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding an impartial investigation into the incident. TVK’s new petition has been filed at a time when the petition demanding a CBI investigation is to be heard on October 10. Last week, Chief Justice B.R. Gavai had agreed to list for urgent hearing the petition seeking CBI probe filed by BJP leader Uma Anandan.
