Is consuming too much sugar harmful to the liver? How much sugar should we eat every day? (Quoc Dung, Dong Nai)
Answer:
Sugar provides energy for the body, but when consumed in excess, it gets converted into fat, leading to fat accumulation in the liver and potentially resulting in fatty liver disease. Excess sugar also triggers the release of inflammatory substances in the body. Chronic inflammation can damage the liver and impair its function.
The recommended maximum daily sugar intake for adults is 25 grams (roughly 6 teaspoons). It is essential to manage sugar intake, especially from processed foods that are high in sugar, like soft drinks, pastries, and similar items. For instance, a typical bubble tea can contain between 40 to 50 grams of sugar. Other products, such as candies, sweetened yogurt, instant cereals, and pre-made sauces, also contain significant amounts of sugar.

Consuming large amounts of refined carbohydrates—like white bread, noodles, rice, and cakes—can also elevate blood sugar levels and promote fat storage in the liver, as these foods are low in fiber and essential nutrients. Instead, it is better to prioritize healthy carbohydrates with a low glycemic index (GI), such as whole grains, vegetables, and fresh, nutrient-rich fruits, to help protect liver health.
In addition to controlling sugar intake, it is crucial to choose healthy food options, exercise regularly, and stay hydrated. Regular supplementation of natural extracts like wasabia and S. marianum can support the regulation of Kupffer cells, promote detoxification, and help protect liver cells.
