The Karnataka government is considering a proposal to introduce a licensing mechanism for digital news broadcastersincluding YouTube channels. The move comes after the newly formed Electronic Media Journalists Association (EMJA) raised concerns about unethical practices in online journalism.
At the inauguration of the EMJA in Hubballi, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed that the association had submitted a memorandum demanding licenses for YouTube-based news platforms. They argued that while traditional TV channels require licences to operate, digital platforms remain unregulatedcreating an uneven playing field.
The association alleged that several YouTubers and digital platforms have been spreading unverified and defamatory contenttarnishing journalism’s reputation. The recent Dharmasthala “secret burials” controversy, widely circulated through YouTube videos and social media, has further intensified the call for regulation.
The Dharmasthala temple administration has already approached a Bengaluru court to remove thousands of posts and videos to the controversy. Officials argue that unchecked reporting on digital platforms enables the spread of misinformation and abuse of free speech rightsdamaging institutions and individuals.
While acknowledging the issue, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stressed the importance of preserving freedom of expression. He said that his government had never acted against media outlets for critical reporting but urged journalists to avoid speculative or unverified news.
Critics of the proposal argue that introducing a licensing regime for digital news channels could lead to government overreachcurbing independent voices and citizen journalism. Many believe the focus should instead be on improving fact-checking, transparency, and platform accountabilityrather than state-controlled licensing.
The Karnataka government has not announced a timeline but has assured that the request will be examined carefully. With digital media becoming the primary news source for millions, the debate on regulation highlights the tension between accountability and press freedom in the digital era.
