Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday offered a rare insight into the more personal side of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, portraying him not only as a strong and decisive leader, but also as a tender, thoughtful, and deeply humane individual.
In a video posted on social media platform X under the hashtag #MyModiStory, Sitharaman recounted a memory that, for her, revealed the Prime Minister’s extraordinary concern for the well-being of his colleagues.
A Call She’ll Never Forget
Reflecting on the day of her first-ever Budget speech, Sitharaman said the most unforgettable part of the experience did not come from the speech itself, but from what happened afterwards.
“I had barely reached home when my phone rang. It was the Prime Minister. The first words I heard were filled with genuine worry: ‘Why didn’t you take care of yourself?’ Before I could even respond, he had already taken action,” she recalled.
According to Sitharaman, Modi immediately sent his personal doctor to her residence, instructing him to carry out all necessary tests and ensure that she was perfectly fine.
What struck her most, she said, was that the Prime Minister’s concern did not end there.
“Even today, every now and then, he asks me: ‘Are you looking after yourself? How are you keeping?’ That kind of compassion from someone who leads a nation is truly extraordinary,” she added.
More Than Just a Strong Leader
Sitharaman emphasised that while most people rightly view Modi as resolute, determined, and serious, she has also witnessed another side of him.
“People see PM Modi as a strong, serious, and determined leader, and yes, he is all of that. But I have also seen another side of him, tender, thoughtful, and humane. That combination of firmness and compassion is what makes him different,” she said.
The reflection comes ahead of Modi’s upcoming birthday, which will be marked as part of #SevaPakhwada2025, a fortnight of service-related activities.
Sitharaman’s story, however, went beyond celebration, offering a glimpse of a leader whose strength, she said, is matched by his humanity.
