The offseason for the Golden State Warriors has largely revolved around the uncertain contract situation with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga. The 22-year-old forward appears to be seeking more than just a new contract; he wants specific incentives that fit his career goals. So far, negotiations haven’t gone as smoothly as he might have hoped.

The Warriors have offered Kuminga several options, but they are still protected by the NBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement rules for restricted free agents. Golden State is clearly not in a rush to trade him, preferring to explore ways to keep him on the team.

One interesting offer came from the Sacramento Kings. ESPN reporters Anthony Slater and Shams Charania reported that the Kings proposed a deal sending Malik Monk and a future first-round pick to Golden State in exchange for Kuminga. Monk, the 2023-24 Sixth Man of the Year runner-up, has three years left on his four-year, $77.97 million contract. The Warriors ultimately rejected the offer, likely because they see Kuminga as having greater long-term value.

Kuminga averaged over 15 points per game last season and is still young with plenty of room to grow. While Monk continues to improve year by year, his larger contract and age may have made him less appealing in comparison to Kuminga’s potential.

For now, the Warriors are staying firm. Their plan appears to be signing Kuminga to a short-term deal before the 2025-26 season begins next month. Golden State wants to maintain control of the situation while keeping its young star in the mix for the team’s future.
