Joe is unbeaten on 99 runs in the third Test match against India being played at Route Lords. Today, when they will score one more run, it will be their 37th Test century, leaving behind Steve Smith and Rahul Dravid and will become the batsman to score the most Test century among active cricketers. This brilliant innings of Root strengthened England’s first innings, when the initial wickets fell early.
The England team started to bat first after winning the toss. Jack Crolyse (18) and Ben Docket (23) were dismissed by Nitish Reddy. After this, Joe Root and Oli Pope (44) shared 109 runs and handled the team. Although the Pope and then Harry Brook (11) also dismissed quickly, Root held one end and finished the day’s game on 99* runs.
Root has scored 36 centuries in Tests so far. As soon as he scored another century, he will get close to Kumar Sangakkara (38), Ricky Ponting (41), Jack Kallis (45) and Sachin Tendulkar (51) with 37 centuries in Test history. Also, he has scored 50+ in the Test 103 times, in this case he is on par with Jack Kallis and Ponting. Ahead of him is now only Sachin who has 119 FIFTI Plus scores.
On the first day, Root completed 3000 Test runs against India as soon as he scored the 45th run and became the first batsman in the world to do so. He has set a tremendous record against India so far and has also become the highest run -scorer in Lord’s.
If the root completes a century today and plays a long innings ahead, he can become the fourth batsman to score the most runs in Test history, leaving behind Rahul Dravid (13288). At present, Root has 13214 runs and he needs only 75 runs to overtake Dravid. Joe Root’s innings is going to add an important chapter not only for England, but also in the history of Test cricket.
