Hanoi police have uncovered a criminal ring involved in producing counterfeit electric motorbikes bearing major brand names, as well as low-quality vehicles.
The Hanoi Economic Police Division announced on Friday that it had initiated a criminal case, with three suspects probed for “manufacturing and trading counterfeit goods.”
According to authorities, the group gathered data on genuine electric motorbike models and organized the production of counterfeit versions at a company located in what was formerly Bac Giang Province, now part of Bac Ninh Province.
Once assembled, the fake vehicles were distributed to various shops in neighboring Hanoi, accompanied by forged documents intended to legitimize their origin.
Since the beginning of January, police found that the ring had sold a large number of fake and substandard electric motorbikes, earning a profit of VND3–4 million (US$118–157) per unit.
On June 16, Hanoi police, in coordination with the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Department of Domestic Market Management and Development, simultaneously inspected three electric motorbike dealerships suspected of violations.
Subsequently, the Economic Police Division raided a manufacturing company in Bac Giang, seizing over 100 electric motorbikes without legal invoices or documentation, along with various machines and equipment used in production.
The vehicles displayed signs of trademark and origin counterfeiting, with a total estimated value exceeding VND1 billion.
Police warned that the sale of substandard electric motorbikes is becoming “increasingly complex,” posing significant risks to consumers.
Criminals frequently counterfeit major brand names to evade authorities, deceive consumers, and avoid taxes.
The issue is also associated with serious fire and explosion incidents.
