Sawan month full of reverence and faith in Hinduism has started from today. This month is dedicated to Lord Shiva and it is considered to be the best time of Shiva Bhakti. Every day of Sawan is special for worshiping Shiva, but Monday is considered to be the most fruitful day. In this holy month, devotees fast, perform Jalabhishek on Shivling and get Shiva grace by chanting ‘Om Namah Shivaya’.


The month of Shravan, commonly known as Sawan, is the fifth month of the Hindu calendar and comes during July-August. This is the time when the monsoon is at its full speed and nature becomes green. In this greenery and cold environment, the divinity and depth of Shiva Bhakti increases even more.


Why is Sawan considered so pure?


According to religious belief, when Hallal poison came out during the sea churning, then Lord Shiva held it in his throat to protect the world. In order to calm the influence of poison, the gods offered water to them, and from then on the tradition of offering water to Shivling in Sawan month. This is the reason that Jalabhishek, Rudrabhishek and other special worship methods have special significance in this month.


Special day to please Lord Shiva


There is a tradition to keep ‘Monday fast’ on every Monday of Shravan month. It is believed that Lord Shiva is very happy to keep fasting with reverence and rule on this day, offering milk, water, belpatra, dhatura and ash on Shivling. Virgin girls observe this fast for the attainment of good groom and married women for their husband’s long life and pleasant marital life.


Mythology to Sawan


Parvati ji’s harsh penance: It is believed that Goddess Parvati did harsh penance in the month of Sawan to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Pleased with his tenacity, Shiva made him his bride. Shiva’s in -law arrival: It is said that Lord Shiva comes to his in -laws in Sawan and during this time he resides among his devotees, which increases the fruit of worship manifold.


How is the festival of Sawan celebrated?


Monday fast: Devotees take a fast in the morning and keep a fast and go to the Shiva temple and perform special worship. Fasting or fasting throughout the day and chanting Shiva Chalisa in the evening.


Kavad Yatra: In North India, a huge Kavad Yatras are organized during Sawan. Devotees take water from holy rivers and travel on foot to Shivdham and perform Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva.


Rudrabhishek and Mantra Chanting: Rudrabhishek in Sawan is considered very virtuous. Apart from this, chanting of “Om Namah Shivaya” and Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is very fruitful.

According to religious beliefs, Shiva Puja performed in Sawan is many times more fruitful than the worship of any other time. This month is not only an opportunity for spiritual progress, but is also considered to be the best time to achieve mental peace, happiness, peace and positive energy in life.
