Star allrounder Amanjot Kaur put up a brilliant all-round performance to take India to a statement 24-run win against England in the second T20I of the five-match series at the County Ground in Bristol on Tuesday, to bag a 2-0 lead in the series, just one win away from clinching it.
Jemimah Rodrigues and Amanjot rescued India from a shaky start with lively fifties, while the bowlers held off England’s chase, overcoming a powerful half-century from Tammy Beaumont.
Put in to bat first, India found themselves at 31/3 within the powerplay before Jemimah and Amanjot built a match-winning 93-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
After Jemimah was dismissed by Lauren Bell in the 15th over, Amanjot and Richa Ghosh added 57 runs for the fifth wicket to take India to a respectable 181.
In the chase, England collapsed to 17/3 in the fourth over before Beaumont and wicketkeeper Amy Jones added 70 runs for the fourth wicket.
After Beaumont was run out by Sneh Rana and Radha Yadav, England soon found themselves at 110/6 in the 15th over.
Em Arlott and Sophie Ecclestone added 47 runs for the seventh wicket before the latter was run out by Smriti Mandhana on the final ball of their innings to restrict them to 157.
India posted the second-highest total in women’s T20Is at Bristol, with the final 10 overs yielding 117 runs, their third-highest tally in the latter half of a women’s T20I innings.
After starting the summer with a 51-run opening partnership against the Windies in Canterbury, Sophia Dunkley and Danni Wyatt have struggled, managing stands of only 0,0, 9 and 2 in their subsequent outings.
The slump has been because of Wyatt’s poor form, as she has scored only 18 runs across five innings.
On Tuesday, Wyatt broke a streak of three successive ducks, but her expected return to form was short-lived. She tried to loft her second ball over the top to find India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur at mid-off.
India play the third T20I against England on Friday at the Kennington Oval in London.
