Raja Kumari, a rapper and singer-songwriter of Indian descent, received an American Music Award (AMA) on Tuesday. At Monday night’s 51st American Music Awards in Los Angeles, she received a nomination for “Arcane League of Legends: Season 2.”
Kumari previously claimed to be the first singer of Indian descent to get an AMA nomination in an interview with PTI.
The song “Renegade (We Never Run)” from “Arcane League of Legends,” which was a joint effort by Kumari, Dominican-Brazilian musician Jarina de Marco, and UK hip-hop artist Stefflon Don, was nominated for Favorite Soundtrack.
The song was really significant to Kumari, she told PTI. “I kind of share the Sidhu (Moose Wala) connection with Stefflon (Don).” She and Sidhu also have a song together. Additionally, Sidhu played the song for me when we first met when we were working together. Because we sort of share this gentle giant, I’ve always had a special place in my heart for her,” Kumari told PTI. She said that since the role in the movie is Indian, she was asked to sing the song.
“They (Arcane team) had heard about me as a woman who could make aggressive music and as a representative of our culture,” Kumari said. She said that she had no idea the song would become that popular. In fact, the song reached the top 10 globally on Spotify’s “Viral 50″ rankings. Something that sort of appeared out of nowhere was that. I recently performed a song for a movie. I didn’t have high hopes for it. People were ultimately very impacted by it,” Kumari added.
The rapper stated that she was starting to think that maybe one had to concentrate on one genre in order to succeed when she received the AMA nomination. “And since I’ve always been a worldwide artist, receiving an AMA award serves as a wonderful reminder that I still have a lot of work ahead of me, as well as a lot more to influence and develop,” she said.
