Mumbai: A report from the Divisional Commissioner's Office reveals that 269 farmers in Marathwada took their own lives between January and March 2025, primarily due to crop failures and overwhelming financial pressures. This tragic figure marks an increase from the 204 suicides recorded during the same period in the previous year, highlighting a disturbing trend of 32% increase in suicide cases. Farmers are grappling with severe water shortages and failing crops, which trap them in a vicious cycle of debt exacerbated by insufficient rainfall, ultimately leading many to suicide.

Beed district has faced the highest incidence of suicides, with 71 farmers taking their lives from January to March 2025, up from 44 during the same months in 2024. The rising suicide rates across the Marathwada region, which encompasses eight districts: Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Dharashiv, Latur, Beed, Nanded, Hingoli, Parbhani, and Jalna, underline the increasing challenges farmers are encountering.

In light of the escalating crisis, the Divisional Commissioner’s office has sought financial assistance from the State government to support the families of the deceased, in alignment with existing government schemes. The total funds requested amount to ₹295 lakh from the District Collectorates across the eight districts. Specific requests include ₹39 lakh from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, ₹20 lakh from Jalna, ₹95 lakh from Nanded, ₹57 lakh from Beed, ₹25 lakh from Latur, and ₹59 lakh from Dharashiv.

These developments emphasize the urgent need for intervention and support for struggling farmers in the region as they face dire circumstances. The situation calls for a concerted effort from the government and local authorities to address the root causes of farmer distress and implement sustainable agricultural practices to prevent further tragedies.

Government records indicate that ₹18 lakh in aid has been allocated to support families affected by farmer suicides in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where 50 suicides occurred from January to March; 15 families qualify for assistance, while 34 cases await review and one does not qualify. This reflects an increase from 34 suicides during the same period last year.

The Beed district has experienced a significant rise in farmer suicides, jumping from 44 last year to 71 this year. The total suicides in Marathwada for the same timeframe are: Beed (71), Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (50), Nanded (37), Parbhani (33), Dharashiv (31), Latur (18), Hingoli (16), and Jalna (13).

Despite the alarming numbers, the financial aid to bereaved families has been inadequate. In Jalna, despite recording 13 suicides, no aid has been allocated, although four families were deemed eligible. In Parbhani, only eight out of 33 cases qualified for assistance, receiving ₹8 lakh in aid. Hingoli's situation mirrors this, with nine out of 16 cases qualifying, resulting in ₹4 lakh being distributed.

In Nanded, while ten families were found eligible from 37 reported suicides, they have not yet received any funds. Likewise, in Beed, where 71 suicides were reported, 27 families qualified for assistance but have not received any support thus far.

In summary, while the administration has disbursed some aid, many families of deceased farmers across the Marathwada region remain without financial support, highlighting a critical gap in the assistance system amid rising suicide rates among farmers.
