“We have the perfect storm,” declared five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, voicing full support for Gukesh D ahead of his much-anticipated clash with Magnus Carlsen at Norway Chess 2025 . “Gukesh won’t be lacking motivation. But Magnus, too, is inspired by the challenge of facing our young talents. We can expect some epic battles.”

The face-off between the world’s youngest classical chess champion and the reigning world no.1 headlines this year’s edition, scheduled from May 26 to June 6 in Stavanger. Gukesh, 18, is on a hot streak — after winning the World Championship, leading India to Olympiad gold, and claiming the Tata Steel Masters title.

This year’s lineup features elite contenders like Hikaru Nakamura , Fabiano Caruana , Arjun Erigaisi , and Wei Yi in the men’s draw. The women’s field includes Ju Wenjun, Koneru Humpy , Vaishali Rameshbabu, and Anna Muzychuk—all competing for equal prize money under the same format.

Reflecting on the tournament’s evolution, Anand said, “Since its start in 2013, Norway Chess has kept innovating—be it with the confessional booth or the Armageddon format. The competition is top-tier.”

On India’s strong presence, he noted, “Indian men’s chess is at its peak. And with Humpy and Vaishali both competing, our women’s game is on the rise too.”

Kjell Madland, Managing Director of Norway Chess, added, “We’re honoured to host this clash. With India’s growing chess talent, bringing Norway Chess to India would be an incredible next step.”
