Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has launched a new Mental Health Promotion Unit in the Department of Psychology. The Vice Chancellor, Prof Mazhar Asif, inaugurated the unit in the presence of Registrar Prof Mahtab Alam Rizvi and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof Mohd Muslim Khan. Many university officials, department heads, and students attended the event.

The Mental Health Promotion Unit was established following the recommendations of the First National Wellbeing Conclave held in November 2024 in Hyderabad. The event was organised by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India.

The unit aims to spread awareness about mental health and offer initial psychological support to students. Faculty members and research scholars will be available on a rota basis to assist students who visit the unit. It is equipped with a variety of psychological tests and a referral directory for students needing more serious care.

Prof Asif said he was pleased with the launch of the unit and dedicated it to all students at JMI. He praised the Department of Psychology for their efforts and stressed the importance of mental health in higher education.

Registrar Prof Rizvi also expressed his appreciation and encouraged wider publicity of the facility so more students could benefit. Other speakers, including Prof Naved Jamal and Prof Mohd Muslim Khan, highlighted the growing need for mental health services in universities.

Prof Sheema Aleem, Head of the Department, thanked everyone involved in setting up the unit and called it a meaningful step forward.
